Status Report of the INCITS Ad Hoc on Sensor Networks

A week-long 2nd meeting of ISO/IEC JTC1 SGSN was convened Monday through Friday, 15-19 September 2008, in Nürnberg, Germany at the Fraunhofer Institute, Center for Applied Research on Technologies for the Logistics Services of Industry (ATL). The meeting was organized by the Fraunhofer Institute and convened by Dr. Yongjin Kim of Modacom Co., Ltd., with the assistance of the secretariat, Ms. Jooran Lee of the Korean Standards Association (KSA).

The meeting was attended by 17 participants representing 5 national bodies
(NBs) (Germany 5, China 4, Korea 2, Japan 1, Norway 1) and 2 liaison organizations (LOs) (SC 6, SC 36).  The meeting resulted in agreement on a draft technical document defining Terms of Reference (ToR), including sensor networks and their components, and identifying application areas and requirements of sensor networks, and suggesting areas of standardization. Six technical contributions were provided by NBs and LOs and discussed.  The revised draft technical document for sensor networks is planned to be distributed to all SGSN members soon.

The meeting recommended to JTC1 that “standardization on sensor networks be initiated in JTC1 as soon as possible to meet the urgent requirements of industry, such as application profiles, requirements analysis, interfaces, identification, etc.”  Resolutions were adopted by the meeting to recommend to JTC1, 1) continuation of the SGSN activity for completion of the report (including the completed ToC) prior to the 2009 JTC1 Plenary meeting, and 2) issuance of an additional call for contributions from NBs and LOs.  A third meeting was scheduled for 19-23 January 2009 to be hosted in Sydney, Australia, by Standards Australia, and a fourth meeting was scheduled for 29 June-3 July 2009 to be hosted in Oslo, Norway, by the NB of Norway.
