INCITS Approves New SCSI Primary Commands Standard

Washington, DC – December 07, 2005 – The InterNational Committee for Information Technology Standards (INCITS) today announced the approval of a new SCSI Primary Commands standard as an American National Standard. The new standard (INCITS 408-2005,
Information technology - SCSI Primary Commands – 3) was developed by the INCITS’ SCSI Storage Interfaces Technical Committee (INCITS T10) and defines the device model for all SCSI devices. The technical committee’s principal focus is the Small Computer System Interface
(SCSI), including the family of SCSI-3 projects

The new standard also defines the SCSI commands that are basic to every device model and the SCSI commands that may apply to any device model. The SCSI command set is designed to provide efficient peer-to-peer operation of SCSI devices (e.g., disks, tapes, printers) by an operating system, and assumes an underlying command-response protocol.

John B. Lohmeyer of LSI Logic Corporation, who chairs the INCITS T10 Technical Committee stated, “The INCITS 408 standard is important because it defines commands that are common to all SCSI devices. These commands are critical for detecting the configuration of SCSI systems and management of SCSI devices. INCITS 408 includes optional reservations commands that operating systems can use to coordinate the usage of SCSI device in ways that prevent data corruption. The publication of this standard by INCITS demonstrates an ongoing commitment to the highest possible quality of SCSI products and will allow companies to evolve new generations of information storage technology.”

The INCITS 408-2005 standard is available for purchase via the eStandards Store at www.ansi.org or by visiting the INCITS website at www.incits.org.
