This proposed American National Standard will specify directly or by reference the requirements for cards used in health care transactions. It will take into consideration both the human and machine aspects and state minimum requirements for conformity. It will also contain physical characteristics, layout, data access techniques, data storage techniques, but not security requirements, and will provide for the technologies of magnetic stripe, contactless integrated circuit, integrated circuit with contact, optical memory, embossing, and photo portrait.
