X3 Announces the Approval of a New Project, Uniform 
Health Care 
Identification Card

Washington, D.C., July, 1995 -- Accredited Standards 
Committee 
X3, Information Technology is announcing Approval of a 
New Project, 
Uniform Health Care Identification Card.

This proposed American National Standard will specify 
directly or by 
reference the requirements for cards used in health care 
transactions. It 
will take into consideration both the human and machine 
aspects and state 
minimum requirements for conformity. It will also contain 
physical 
characteristics, layout, data access techniques, data storage 
techniques, but 
not security requirements, and will provide for the 
technologies of 
magnetic stripe, contactless integrated circuit, integrated 
circuit with 
contact, optical memory, embossing, and photo portrait. This 
standard is to 
be an application of existing card standards to health care, 
and will employ 
health care identification data defined by ANSI ASC X12 
standards
