Coherence and persistence of data descriptions and usage depend on accurate documentation realized by following rules described in standards. The six part international Standard under development by ISO/IEC JTC 1 SC 14, Specification and Standardization of Data Elements, describes a set of standardization methods for six aspects of data elements: attribution, classification, definition, naming, identification, and registration.
