X3 Announces the Public Comment Period for ISO/IEC 9579-2:1993/PDAM 1, Information Technology - Open Systems Interconnection - Remote Database Access - Part 2: SQL Specialization - Amendment 1: Support for SQL 92
Washington D.C., November 1995 -- Accredited Standards Committee X3, Information Technology is announcing the public comment period for ISO/IEC 9579-2:1993/PDAM 1. The public review extends from January 19, 1996 to March 19, 1996. The existing RDA/SQL Specialization, ISO/IEC 9579-2:1993, provides RDA facilities to support the Entry SQL level of ISO/IEC 9075:1992, Database Language SQL. This proposed draft Amendment to the RDA/SQL Specialization provides additional RDA facilities to support the Intermediate SQL and Full SQL levels of the SQL standard. Taken together with the Generic RDA standard, ISO/IEC 9579-1:1993, the amended RDA/SQL Specialization will provide communications protocols that allow a conforming RDA Client to communicate with a conforming RDA Server to provide complete access to all features in a database managed by a processor conforming to any level of the SQL-92 standard. This is a protocol standard only - programming language bindings and call level interfaces are provided by other SQL standards (e.g. ISO/IEC 9075-3:1995, SQL/CLI). New features in this specification include support for additional SQL-92 data types DATE, TIME, TIMESTAMP, and BIT string, as well as new protocol elements for the exchange of SQL Diagnostic and SQL Descriptor information, and enhancements for connection and transaction management. These new facilities provide an SQL application on the client side more efficient support for Dynamic SQL queries and runtime management of SQL warnings and exceptions. Note: This proposed draft amendment is being processed simultaneously as an American National Standard and an International Standard. The public review closes on March 19, 1996. However, in order for comments to affect the position of the U.S. TAG, they must be received no later than February 14, 1996. Therefore, all commentors are urged to submit comments as early as possible in the public review period. Public review comments received after February 14, 1996 will be addressed and considered for future balloting and/or revision. To facilitate speedy consideration of comments, please submit them via email (x3sec@itic.nw.dc.us). Please note, however, that an original hardcopy with signature is *required* before the comment will be registered as a formal public review comment. Submit all comments to: X3 Secretariat, Attn.: Barbara Bennett, 1250 Eye Street, NW, Suite 200, Washington, DC 20005. Send a copy to: ANSI, Attn.: BSR Center, 11 West 42nd Street, New York, NY 10036.
