Washington D.C., December 1995 -- Accredited Standards Committee X3, Information Technology is announcing the public comment period for X3.285:199x. The public review extends from January 19, 1996 to March 19, 1996. The goal of data registration is the maintenance of the meaning, representation, and identification of units of data over time and distance. Coherence and persistence of data descriptions and usage depend on accurate documentation. The process for documenting data descriptions is data registration and the place for documenting these descriptions is a data registry. A data registry is a place to keep characteristics of data that are necessary to clearly describe, inventory, analyze, and classify data. A data registry supports data sharing with cross-system and cross-organization descriptions of common data. Units of shareable data have precise identifiers, meanings, structures, and values. They are consistently deployed among users and systems and are centrally administered. A data registry assists users of shared data to have a common understanding of a unit of data's meaning, representation, and identification. This standard specifies the structure of a data registry. The structure is stated in the form of a conceptual data model. Submit all comments to: X3 Secretariat, Attn.: Lynn Barra, 1250 Eye Street, NW, Suite 200, Washington, DC 20005.
