X3 Announces an Informal Call for Comments on the
Working
Document for Programming Language Smalltalk
Washington D.C., March 1996 - Accredited Standards Committee X3,
Information Technology announces an informal call for comments on the
working document for Programming Language Smalltalk.
Comments should be submitted not later than April 30, 1996. Comments
received after the deadline will be reviewed and considered during the
processing of subsequent drafts (if any).
This working document to be reviewed represents the work to date of X3
Technical Committee X3J20, Smalltalk. The main focus of this informal call
for comments is to solicit substantive/technical comments as opposed to
editorial comments.
The goal of X3J20 was to produce a written standard for the Smalltalk
language such that:
- working only from the standard, a conforming implementation can be
produced;
- Smalltalk programs which conform to the standard will have the same
execution semantics on any conforming implementation; and
- the standard shall be sufficiently complete to allow useful Smalltalk
programs to be constructed
This document provides the background on Smalltalk concepts, specifies
the language syntax and semantics, and specifies the standard class
library. The standard does not specify the full range of class libraries. It
does provide facilities to create such classes that will work on compliant
implementations having identical external facilities to support them.
All comments should be submitted directly to the X3J20 technical
committee via email to x3j20@qks.com. If you do not have email,
comments can be sent to the X3J20 chairman, Mr. Yen-Ping Shan, IBM
Corporation, PO Box 12195, Bldg. 062, RTP, NC 27709.
A call for possible patents and pertinent issues (copyrights, trademarks) is
also being issued. Please submit information on these issues to the X3
Secretariat at 1250 Eye Street NW, Suite 200, Washington DC 20005.
Email: x3sec@itic.nw.dc.us FAX: (202)638-4922.
The working document can be purchased for $30.00 from the Global
Engineering Documents, 15 Inverness Way East, Englewood, CO 80112,
1800-854-7179.
