X3 Announces the Approval of a New Project, Magnetic Tape Format for Information Interchange, 128-Track, Parallel Serpentine, 12.65 mm (1/2 in), 3400 bpmm (86 360 bpi) Run Length Limited Recording
Washington D.C., May 1996 -- Accredited Standards Committee X3, Information Technology announces approval of this new project being developed within Technical Committee, X3B5, Flexible Magnetic Media and Formats. This standard represents the minimum requirements for the physical formatting and recording of data on a 12.65 mm (1/2 in) magnetic tape cartridge in a 128 track format for data interchange between recording systems. This format provides capabilities that increase cartridge capacity and, when combined with compression, achieve significantly increased cartridge capacities. This standard will refer to a yet to be developed ANSI standard for the characteristics of the unrecorded cartridge. The next two meetings of X3B5 are June 11-12, 1996 in Minneapolis, MN and August 20-21, 1996 in San Francisco, CA. Inquiries regarding this project should be sent to the Chairman of X3B5, Mr. Richard Steinbrenner, AT&T Bell Labs., Room 2A-152, Whippany Rd., Whippany, NJ 07981.
