X3 Announces the Approval of a New Project, Fibre Channel (FC) Private Loop Direct Attach (FC-PLDA) Techncial Report
Washington D.C., May 1996 -- Accredited Standards Committee X3, Information Technology announces approval of this new project being developed within Technical Committee, X3T11, Device Level Interface. This Technical Report will define a subset of the FC-AL and FCP definitions oriented towards the ability to implement peripheral devices in existing standard form factors which can be directly attached to a private loop (i.e. an isolated loop with no wider connectivity through a Fabric); The ability to implement serial interface peripheral devices in a cost-effective manner to speed migration from the existing parallel interface technologies; The provision of a consistent peripheral device definition and interconnection practice to simplify host attachment and loop configurability; Other capabilities which fit within the general scope of implementing a new generation of products to match newly emerging serial standards while simplifying migration from the existing installed base. The recommended Technical Report will reference as a basis the definitions being produced by the FC-AL and FCP projects. No changes to those definitions will be required by this Technical Report. It is possible, however, that desirable additional capabilities may be defined in the process of creating this Technical Report. If this occurs, those additional capabilities will be included in FC-AL and FCP definitions as part of their ongoing development or reaffirmation. The next meeting of X3T11 is June 10-14, 1996 in Santa Fe, NM. Inquiries regarding this project should be sent to the Chairman of X3T11, Mr. Roger Cummings, DPT, 140 Candace Drive, Maitland, FL 32751. Email: cummings_roger@dpt.com. An initial call for possible patents and other pertinent issues (copyrights, trademarks) is now being issued. Please submit information on these issues to the X3 Secretariat at 1250 Eye Street NW, Suite 200, Washington DC 20005. Email: x3sec@itic.nw.dc.us FAX: (202)638-4922.
