X3 Announces the Approval of a New Project, High-Performance Parallel Interface - 6400 Mbit/s Physical Layer (HIPPI-6400-PH)
Washington D.C., July 1996 -- Accredited Standards Committee X3, Information Technology announces approval of this new project being developed within Technical Committee, X3T11, Device Level Interface. The reference number for this project is 1213-D. This project recommends the development of a physical layer standard with the following goals: - a single-stream data bandwidth of 6400 Mbit/s (800 MByte/s); - latency less than 1 microsecond plus propagation delay; - a signaling protocol capable of sustaining full data rate over distances up to 1 km; - copper cable distances of at least 50 m; - fiber cable distances of at least 200 m initially, up to 1 km with technology improvements; - robust error detection; - retransmission on errors; - simple, with a minimal number of options; - multiplexing for up to four independent data streams; - ability to be switched between up to 1000 attachments; - support for broadcast - compatible with existing HIPPI upper-layer protocols; - and the ability to carry one or more 800 Mbit/s HIPPI-PH streams. The next two meetings of X3T11 are August 5-9, 1996 in the Boulder, CO area and October 7-11, 1996 in St. Petersburg Beach, FL. All organizations and individuals who are materially or directly affected are invited to participate. Inquiries regarding this project and other Fibre Channel projects should be sent to the Chairman of X3T10, Mr. Roger Cummings, Distributed Processing Technology, 140 Candace Dr., Maitland, FL 32751. Email: cummings_roger@dpt.com. An initial call for possible patents and other pertinent issues (copyrights, trademarks) is now being issued. Please submit information on these issues to the X3 Secretariat at 1250 Eye Street NW, Suite 200, Washington DC 20005. Email: x3sec@itic.nw.dc.us FAX: (202)638-4922.
