X3 Announces the Approval of the Revised Program of Work
for Database Language SQL (SQL3)
Washington D.C., September 1996 -- Accredited Standards Committee X3,
Information Technology announces the revised program of work for the revision
of Database Language SQL. The SQL3 development is being done in X3H2,
Database, the US TAG to JTC 1/SC21/WG3, the International Subcommittee for
Database.
The revised program of work responds to the need to independently group the
current SQL standards (SQL2) and the emerging new SQL projects (SQL3). By
aligning the program of work between X3H2 and JTC 1/SC21, this supports the
goal to produce identical domestic and international SQL Language standards.
The revised scope for the SQL3 standards specifies additional statements, data
types, clauses, and other language for increased user capabilities and greater
portability among heterogeneous environments, including both relational and
object-oriented database systems.
SQL3 is comprised of eight parts and will be published individually, as work in
separable technological areas is completed:
- Part 1: SQL/Framework
- Part 2: SQL/foundation
- Part 3: SQL/CLI
- Part 4: SQL/PSM
- Part 5: SQL/Bindings
- Part 6: SQL/Transactions
- Part 7: SQL/Temporal
- Part 8: SQL/Object
All organizations and individuals who are directly or materially affected are
invited to participate. The next meeting of X3H2 is October 28-31, 1996 in
Wilmington, DE. Inquiries regarding SQL should be sent to the Chairman of
X3H2, Dr. Donald R. Deutsch, Sybase, Inc., Suite 800, 6550 Rock Spring Drive,
Bethesda, MD 20817. Email: deutsch@sybase.com.
An initial call for possible patents and other pertinent issues (copyrights,
trademarks) is now being issued. Please submit information on these issues to
the X3 Secretariat at 1250 Eye Street NW, Suite 200, Washington, DC 20005.
