X3 Announces the Revision of ANSI X3.118:1984,
PIN Pad Specification
Washington D.C., September 1996 -- Accredited Standards Committee X3,
Information Technology is announcing that ANSI X3.118:1984 is being revised
within Technical Committee, X3B10, Identification Cards and Related Devices.
The standard identifies the fixed arrangement of basic characters and keys of
a PIN pad.
To align WITH ISO 9995-8, the characters "Q" and "Z" would be remapped to the
"7" and "9" keys, respectively, rather than to the "1" key. Most of the ATM and
POS terminals today follow X3.118 in the US. Given that an international
standard exists and that this revision promises to align with it, the revised
standard is expected to be very stable. In addition, the overall use of the 10-
digit keypad layout is unlikely to decrease any time soon.
Inquiries regarding this project (X3 Project 436-R) should be sent to the
Chairman of X3B10, Mr. Joseph Naujokas, International Card Manufactures
Association, Naujokas and Associates, 3916 Esgarth Way, Owings Mills, MD
21117. Email: 102474.773@compuserve.com.
Please contact the X3B10 chairman for information on committee meetings. All
organizations and individuals who are materially or directly affected are invited
to participate in the revision of this standard.
An initial call for possible patents and other pertinent issues (copyrights,
trademarks) is now being issued. Please submit information on these
issues to the X3 Secretariat at 1250 Eye Street NW, Suite 200, Washington
DC 20005. Email: x3sec@itic.nw.dc.us FAX: (202)638-4922.
