X3 Announces the Public Comment Period for X3.303:199x, Fibre Channel Physical and Signalling Interface -3 (FC-PH-3)
Washington D.C., Novmeber 1996 - Accredited Standards Committee X3, Information Technology is announcing the public comment period for X3.303:199x. Development of this draft standard is being done in technical committee X3T11, Device Level Interface The public review extends from December 20, 1996 to February 18, 1997. The proposed project recommends the development of a third generation physical interface for Fibre Channel. This interface will be fully backwards-compatible with the architecture defined in both FC-PH and FC-PH-2, but will also incorporate significant new technologies and functionality. Included within the recommended scope for this project are: a) The definition of physical variants based upon new technologies which incorporate improvements in operating distance, data rate or cost/performance over the definitions contained in FC-PH and FC-PH-2. b) The definition of parallel physical variants, incorporating new packaging technologies. c) The definition of the framing protocol support necessary for the efficient use of the physical variants references in a) and b) above. d) The definition of additional protocol functionality, specifically in terms of "Link Services", based upon experience with current FC implementations in the field.
