Explanation of NCITS/SD-4 Headings

PROJECT NUMBER
An unique project identifier.

PROJECT TYPES

• S-STUDY
  Study projects are to determine the feasibility and need for a development project which has been proposed to NCITS (see NCITS /SD-3). Study projects are managed by NCITS.
• D-DEVELOPMENT
  A project approved by NCITS, to produce an American National Standard.
• DT-DEVELOPMENT
  A project to produce an NCITS Technical Report.
• R-REVISION
  A project, to revise an existing approved American National Standard.
• RF-REAFFIRMATION
  As a result of the ANSI required five year review when the NCITS Technical Committee recommends that an existing American National Standard be reaffirmed without change.
• M-MAINTENANCE
  The status into which a Development project is automatically placed upon approval of an American National Standard by ANSI. Activity for this type of project includes responses to inquiries for clarification and any comments received on experience with its use. As appropriate in individual cases, maintenance activity usually includes also the support by NCITS toward adoption of its technical content as an International Standard.
• L-LIAISON
  Formal recognition of relations with an ISO/IEC JTC 1 project for which NCITS has TAG responsibility. A Liaison project is automatically established for each project established by ISO/IEC JTC 1, and for others when requested by an NCITS Technical Committee.  Upon submission of Project Proposals in accordance with the SD-3, and subsequent approval by  NCITS, they may become International Development projects (see below), for adoption of the subsequent International standards as American National Standards.  [*Note:  In 1996, NCITS adopted a policy in which all JTC 1 projects under this activity would be adopted as American National Standards upon approval of the International Standard, unless otherwise specified by the Technical Committee.]
• I-INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT
  An approved new work item proposal (NP) which NCITS has committed to support.  The intended result is an International Standard which will also be adopted as an American National Standard. Approval of a Project Proposal reflecting this intention is required for establishment of an International Development Project. An "I" project indicates that the U.S. will participate in developing the International standard and intends to adopt the resulting International Standard as an American National Standard.  The international standard will undergo a National review process throughout its development.  This is also referred to as 'concurrent processing'.
• RI-REVISION - INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT
  For U.S. participation in the revision of an International Standard which has been adopted as an American National Standard, and where the revised International Standard is also intended to be adopted as a revised American National Standard.

• NCITS nnn-19xx
  ANSI designation of an approved American National Standard. The year date following the designation is the year of ANSI BSR approval. In the case of an ANSI/ISO the year date following the designation is the year of ISO approval.
• NCITS nnn DRAFT
  A Draft proposed American National Standard approved by the originating NCITS Technical Committee, accepted by NCITS for public comment and submitted to the ANSI Board of Standards Review for concurrent review. It is continued with this identifier until approved by ANSI, and the year of approval added.
• NCITS/TR-n DRAFT
  Proposed NCITS Technical Report, being reviewed for approval by NCITS. It is continued with this identifier until approved by NCITS, and the year of approval added.
• NCITS/TR-n-19xx
  Published NCITS Technical Report.
• IS
  An abbreviation for 'ANSI/ISO/IEC'; the designation that precedes an international standard that has been adopted by ANSI.
• [Reaffirmed or Adopted]
  In the case of an American National Standard, the date of approval for reaffirmation will be placed in these brackets preceeded by an "R". In the case of an ANSI/ISO, the date of ANSI approval for adoption will be placed in these brackets with no preceeding alpha.
• International Standards Only
  International Standards that have not been adopted as American National Standards will be listed as an "L" project with no standard designation but will however be identified in the ISO/IEC JTC 1 Document Number.

TITLE
This provides a general title for the project being developed and is not necessarily the publication title of the standard.

ISO/IEC JTC 1 PROJECT DESIGNATION
Related project within ISO/IEC JTC 1--however, respective boundaries of the two projects may not exactly coincide. Absence of an entry in this column indicates that no related JTC 1 project has been identified or established. Within the Project Number, the first digit(s) identifies the responsible ISO/IEC JTC 1 Subcommittee.

ISO/IEC JTC 1 DOCUMENT NUMBER
The ISO/IEC JTC 1 documents listed are related to the NCITS project in technical subject, but may agree or differ in technical content with an American National Standard that may be listed in the standard designation for that project. (For further information refer to the column on Technical Equivalence)

  Final Draft International Standard, approved by a subcommittee and being considered by ISO/IEC JTC 1
• PDAM
  Proposed Draft Amendment being developed within a subcommittee of ISO/IEC JTC 1
• DAM
  Draft Amendment, approved by a subcommittee and being considered by ISO/IEC JTC 1
• PDTR
  Proposed Draft ISO/IEC JTC 1 Technical Report
