LX/03-0012
December 29, 2003
TO: INCITS Executive Board
From: Dave Thewlis, Chairman, INCITS Study Group on Linux
Subject: Report on Formation Meeting of the INCITS Study
Group on Linux
1. The INCITS Study Group on Linux held its formation meeting
on 2 December, 2003 at ITI headquarters in Washington, D.C. In attendence
were:
- Mr. Ed Barrett, Sony
- Dr. Donald Deutsch, Oracle
- Mr. Scott Jameson, HP
- Mr. Jim Litchfield, Sun Microsystems
- Mr. David Thewlis, Intel, Chair
- Ms. Isabelle Valet-Harper, Microsoft
Ms. Jennifer Garner from the INCITS Secretariat acted as Secretary for the
formation meeting, and Mr. Patrick Morris, the INCITS Executive Director,
attended for a portion of the meeting.
2. As we currently expect the INCITS Study Group on Linux
to be relatively short-lived and to be replaced by an actual INCITS Technical
Committee once a valid new work item in the Linux area is established within
SC 22, we chose not to call for volunteers for Vice Chair or for Secretary.
Should the INCITS SGL be continued substantially past the February meeting
of the SC 22 Linux Rapporteur Group and have additional meetings, it will
be necessary to consider a Vice Chair and certainly a Secretary.
3. The bulk of the INCITS SGL meetng was devoted to reviewing
the documents and activities which led to the formation of the SC 22 Linux
Rapporteur Group, including the JTC 1/SC 22 Linux Study Group meeting in May,
2003, and the resolutions from the SC 22 Plenary in September 2003, and to
the agenda for the SC 22 Linux Rapporteur Group in February, 2004 in Tokyo,
Japan. During the course of this discussion, preliminary U.S. positions
and Delegate's Instructions were developed for the upcoming SC 22 LRG meeting.
4. As no contributions had been circulated for the SC 22
LRG meeting, a subsequent teleconference of the INCITS LSG meeting was established
for 16 January 2004, from 13:00 to 15:00 Eastern. At that meeting any
contributions which have been received will be reviewed and U.S. positions
established. As that will be the second meeting of the INCITS SGL, anyone
participating in that meeting who was not present at this meeting will also
achieve voting status.
5. No U.S. contributions to the SC 22 LRG have been proposed.
The INCITS SGL set a deadline of 12 December for any proposed contributions
to be submitted to the INCITS SGL with a submission deadline to ANSI of 29
December. No such contributions were submitted.
6. The initial delegation to the SC 22 Linux Rapporteur
Group meeting in Tokyo, Japan in February 2004 was established:
- Mr. Dave Thewlis - Intel Corporation and US Head of Delegation (HoD)
- Mr. Franc Camara - Microsoft Corporation (nominated by Ms. Isabelle
Valet-Harper of Microsoft)
- Dr. Donald Deutsch - Oracle Corporation
- Mr. Scott Jameson - Hewlett-Packard Company
- Mr. Jim Litchfield - Sun Microsystems, Inc
Delegates were cautioned that the deadline for registration for the SC 22
LRG meeting and for the hotel was 21 December, and they were responsible for
submitting their own registrations.
7. The following individuals were unable to attend the INCITS
SGL meeting but had expressed an interest in participating in the INCITS
SGL and potentially being part of the delegation to the SC 22 LRG meeting:
Mr. James Moore (IEEE), Mr. Robert Gaskill (OSD/S&T), Mr.
Hideki Hiura (Sun Microsystems), Mr. Ron Silletti (IBM) and Mr. Ted Ts'o (IBM).
Ms. Garner was requested to notify these individuals that they must
indicate their interest in participation by 12 December and register by 21
December. The following individuals were subsequently added to the delegation:
- Mr. Robert Gaskill, OSD/S&T
- Mr. Ted T'so, IBM
All members of the delegation must participate in the 16 January teleconference
to remain on the delegation. Other INCITS SGL participants are welcome
to participate in the teleconference if they wish.
8. Ms. Garner prepared and distributed detailed minutes
of the formation meeting as document LX/03-0011.
