LINUX STUDY GROUP REPORT TO THE INCITS EB - JULY 2004
From:
Dave Thewlis, Chairman INCITS Linux Study Group
In April the Free Standards Group requested an extension on their
deadline for submitting LSB 2.0 as a PAS. The extension was granted
and FSG now has until 31 October to submit its first PAS. I have been
told that their current plan is to submit it in late summer, around the
time of if not otherwise connected with the LinuxWorld event in August.
There have been no other reported Linux-related activities or documents
in JTC 1 or INCITS. The outstanding work item on noting differences between
Posix and Linux is on hold pending the submission of the PAS. As a
consequence the Linux Study Group has not met either in person or by teleconference.
The recommendations from the Linux Rapporteur Group (JTC 1 N 3718)
will be received and discussed at the SC 22 Plenary meeting in September
in Korea (this meeting is the week prior to the INCITS meetings in Chicago).
The report on differences between Posix and Linux is not likely to be completed
by the SC 22 Plenary meeting. At this point there are no other Linux-related
items on the preliminary agenda of the SC 22 Plenary meeting; a new version
of the agenda is due out at the end of July. Even if there are no Linux-related
documents going in to the Plenary, It is not at all clear what if anything
might come up on the floor at the SC 22 Plenary meeting, or whether SC 22
will accept the recommendations from the Linux Rapporteur Group as presented.
Assuming nothing new associated with Linux emerges from the SC 22
Plenary meeting, the INCITS Linux Study Group can be disbanded. If
anything significant comes from the SC 22 Plenary then the LSG be needed
in the future.
