ACTION ITEM:* (Zimmermann) will filter V2-SC35 messages and identify on
subject line items for Wg6, WG7 or WG8, and indicate items that require actions.
How to solve the information overflow from v2sc35@nist.gov:
- IR maintains International Tickler on Twiki.
- Jennifer to send her messages to the IR only, not to v2sc35
- IR to filter JTC1 document list and send only references to relevant
documents
- Indicate working group in subject line, if relevant, e.g. "[WG6]" (Check
if Andrew email system from CMU is appropriate for this)
- For votes, etc., indicate in subject line, e.g. "ACTION REQUIRED BY ..."
Other report items:
Discussion on potential NP on 24752 part 6: Task Model Description.
LaPlant
to be appointed as liaison to INCITS V-36 in response to the request from
INCITS.
Motion: (Vanderheiden/Trewin): To endorse the appointment of Bill
LaPlant

Update from Georgia Tech
Task Model Description (TMD) on Twiki: http://www.itl.nist.gov/twiki/bin/view/NCITSV2/TaskModelDescription
Why should we build an addition to the existing house?
- Socket provides the leaves of the task model tree
- Many interactions (tasks) involve more than one step
- Express rich relationships between commands and variables
- 4 "intelligent features" that require a TMD:
- intelligent help provided by generic help interpreter ("plan
recognition")
- cross-device operations (e.g. "vacation mode setting for the house")
- natural language interaction (use of sentences - more than voice
operation)
- customization (customers can define their goals by themselves,
manufacturer cannot foresee all possible goals)
- Video at http://www.merl.com/pub/diamondhelp.mov. Bottom half of screen
reflects current URC model. Top half of screen reflects TMD.
Q: Who provides the TMD? A: In short-term the product designer and
manufacturer. In long-term this standard could create a marketplace for task
models.
User study at MERL: Java implementation of washer-dryer. Compare GUI with
printed manual vs. DiamondHelp?
with no manual.
Q: Where is the UI provided by the target manufacturer? A: It is in the
bottom half of the screen. The top half is always identical. (If multiple
devices are involved, even multiple UIs could be lined up.) Also the top half
could be skinned to bear some identity of the target manufacturer.
Immediate candidate areas:
- Home appliances
- Medical equipment (a lot about procedures, interoperability between
devices, complex user interfaces)
- Military environment (sophisticated equipment)
Task model vs. domain model: For automatic planning (on the fly) we need a
completely accurate domain model. By this you could generate a task model
automatically. But a completely accurate domain model is hard to get. That's why
we should not rely on this but rather provide for pre-defined tasks (task
model).
